Different types of Coffee roasts

This weeks blog is about different types of coffee roasts.
Below are some facts that you may want to know about each kind of roast to help you determine what type of coffee you'd like the next time you walk in!

Light Roast

Light roasts are light in color and have no oil on the surface. You may think that darker roasts would have more caffeine but lighter roasts actually have the most caffeine. This is because the longer the beans are roasted, then more caffeine is cooked out of the bean.

Light roasted beans generally reach an internal temperature of 180°C – 205°C. At around 205°C, the beans crack and expand in size. This is known as the “first crack”. At the first crack, you know that you have successfully conjured up a "light roast".

Medium Roast

Medium roasts are slightly darker in color. They as well have no oil on the surface. They lack a grain taste that a light roast has. They have more of a balanced flavor and acidity. There is not as much caffeine in these roasts but they do have more caffeine than a darker roast. Medium roasts reach an internal temperature between 210°C – 220°C between the end of the first crack and the beginning of the second crack.

Our medium roasts are Jockey Joe and Gideons Grind

Medium- Dark Roast

Medium- Dark roasts have a darker color. They have some oil showing on the surface. They have a heavier body in comparison to the light and medium roasts. They reach an internal temperature between 225°C – 230°C between the beginning and middle of the second crack. The taste of a medium-dark roast is a little more spicy.

Our medium-dark roast is the famous Clean Bean

Dark Roast

Dark roasts are a dark brown in color, sometimes black. They do have oil on the surface which is usually evident in the cup after you brew it. They have a bold and smokey taste. Surprisingly, they have the least amount of caffeine (except Deathwish. That has 200% more caffeine because of the profile of the bean and the unique roasting process). This roast will reach an internal temperature between 240°C – 250°C which is about the end of the second crack.

Our dark roasts are Spac Attack, Deathwish and Marrakesh Express.
